Q. Is there surgery available for spondilos
DR. MASSIMO ORIOLES, DVM, MRCVS
A. It would depend on where is the spondylosis and if it is associated with intervertebral disc disease (slipped disc) or not. For most type of spondylosis there is no surgical treatment recommended, but only pain management and supportive and complementary treatment (physiotherapy, acupuncture).
For lombo-sacral spondylosis with nerve compression (the so called cauda equina syndrome or lombo-sacral stenosis) surgical decompressive treatment may be an option. Usually before surgery advanced imaging (Magnetic resonance imaging- MRI) investigations are performed.
Surgery and MRI are usually available in specialists referral clinics. Please discuss with your veterinarian these options.
