Q. Feline distemper how long does the disease last in it's acute stage does the cat shed the virus for life
DR. MASSIMO ORIOLES, DVM, MRCVS
A. The duration of this self-limiting illness is rarely more than 5–7 days. Mortality is highest in young kittens <5 mo old. Cats are infected oronasally by exposure to infected animals, their feces, secretions, or contaminated fomites, but unfortunately the causative virus is very resilient and can survive for years in contaminated environment.
Excellent inactivated and modified live virus vaccines that provide solid, long-lasting immunity are available for prevention of feline panleukopenia.
