Q. is AKA /TECA ADVISEABLE FOR A 11 YEAR OLD DOG ?
DR. EVE PUGH, DVM, CVA
A. If this procedure has been recommended for your dog because of severe ear issues then it is likely advisable to do so. Usually this is recommended when the ear canals are completely distorted in shape and scarred from chronic ear infections and there is reason to believe the dog is deaf and in discomfort. I find that these dogs act like they are much happier after they have healed from the procedure. I am assuming your question is related to your dog's age. If there are no underlying heart problems and bloodwork is normal, I think the risk with anesthesia is far less than the benefit your dog will gain from the procedure.
