Q. My African gray parrot has a swollen eye. What could be the possible cause?

Answered By
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS

A. two typical diseases can cause swollen eyes- the first psitaciosis ( a bacterial infection caused by chlamydia) and hypovitaminosis A, a deficiency in vitamin A (usually due to poor seed based diet). Both cases need medical attention and possible change in food (parrot pellets are a healthier complete diet). There could also be other causes for a swollen eye in an African Grey but those two are the most common. I would recommend to visit an avian specialist in your area for treatment and further advice regarding nutrition.

A. It may be injury or infection. Have your bird seen by an experienced avian vet sooner rather than later to prevent permanent damage, loss of vision or unnecessary pain.
