Q. Our dogs have pyoderma have tried every thing . Can you help?
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. Pyoderma is an infection of he skin layer. Depending on the anatomical place of the condition and the severity treatment can vary a lot. Because we are dealing with an infection antibiotic need to be used. In some cases antibiotic treatment for pyoderma may last up to 6 weeks so patience is a must. If the pyoderma seems to start resolving but then comes back you might be dealing with either a resistant bacteria or an underlying condition (immune suppression, allergies, mites...). If it is a resistant bacteria newer antibiotic generations should be used, if allergies are involved and your dog is itchy she must be prescribe something for that as well (as itching will make the infection worst).
