Q. What breeds of Guinea pigs are more at risk from vitamin c deficiency
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. All guinea pigs have the same risk as guinea pigs cannot manufacture themselves vitamin C, they need to get it from an external source in form of fruits and vegetables. With a balanced there shouldn't be a problem but if they lack vitamin C in their diet they might develop a condition called "scurvey" with symptoms like swollen joints, weakness, skin damage, diarrhea and loss of appetite. In these cases additional vitamin C additive in form of injections or drops need to be given.
