Q. I have an Australian bulldog that can not urinate, has had test done but nobody can seem to find the problem. Any ideas?
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. there are several possibility, it could be a central nervous system issue (brain or spine) or it could be a bladder atony condition (bladder muscles or bladder nerves affected), it could be a urinary blockage (bladder stones) or a tumor. Electrolyte disturbance (calcium, potassium) could also be the cause, as well as some medication he might be taking (opioids for example). Urine analysis, blood test, Xray and ultrasound would be the first line of diagnostic tools that could potentially revile the problem.
