Q. Can you explain exactly what the medication CARPROFEN is used for in dogs?
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. Carprofen which is more commonly known as Rymadil, is used as a pain killer for dogs. It treats pain of various sources, such as post operative pain, chronic arthritic pain and teeth pain. It is also used as a mild anti inflammatory agent and as a symptomatic treatment to reduce fever.
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. Yes of course. Carprofen is a common NSAID that is used for a number of different disease processes in the dog including more commonly aiding in the healing of surgical incisions, lacerations/cuts, arthritis, etc. There are many other uses for Carprofen as well, and also many precautions. Carprofen and other NSAIDs are used cautiously in pets with previous kidney disease and also in excess or prolonged use, Carprofen has been implicated in causing GI ulcerations so its use should be guided by a licensed veterinarian to help avoid these potential risks. - Dr. H
