Q. My shar pei vomits bile early in the morning almost every morning until I get her to eat something and then she is fine. What would cause this?
DAVID ELBEZE, DVM, MRCVS
A. Most probably over acidity in the stomach. Some dogs suffer from this condition which can be influenced by various factors.
Usually feeding your dog later at night and early in the morning should prevent that - the idea behind it is to not let acidity settle in the stomach for to long.
If this is not successful, your vet can prescribe anti acid medications
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. Early morning vomiting is commonly known as bilous vomiting syndrome. This is basically where the is too much acid that has built up overnight on an empty stomach and that acid causes nausea first thing in the morning.
This can be treated with antacids like Famotidine/Pepcid AC (@ dosage of 0.5-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs) or Omeprazole/Prilosec (@ dosage of 0.5-1 mg/kg every 24 hrs). It can take up to 2 weeks to start to see effects of the medication and both of these are readily available over the counter.

A. Your Shar Pei could be suffering from chronic pancreatitis, ulcers, and also could suffer from diseases he was born with such as a hiatal hernia, congenital megaesophagus, Amyloidosis, Food intolerance
Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IgA deficiency and Lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis. All these are Shar Pei -typical problems. I suggest you see a veterinarian and have your dog examined. Regular vomiting can damage the esophagus as well.
