Q. dachshound has coughing fits. other than vaccinations she is only around our other dachshound.
Has had cough 2-3 months. appears to be getting worse.

A. 2-3 months of coughing is usually a serious condition. the most common options are heartworm, lungworm, heart failure or lung tumor.
It would be best to take him to the vet and start a diagnostic process ASAP in order to be able to treat this condition.

A. I strongly you recommend a full physical exam and chest x-rays in order to investigate what is underlying such a chronic cough. Tracheal disease is relatively common in this age group and breed and is important to be managed if present
A. Schedule an exam with your veterinarian. A physical exam, blood work and chest xrays may diagnose infection. If there is exercise intolerance or difficulty breathing, consider an echocardiogram to assess cardiac architecture and function to diagnose heart disease. Testing for heartworm disease would also be recommended.
