Q. My dog shes 7 months old chihuahua sheds alot, she didn't at first but all of a sudden starting shedding to much. What can I do to reduce it?
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. Minimizing pet shedding is often a futile task, because this is something that all pets do naturally. Some pets will naturally shed more during changes in season or during certain seasons.
However, there are some things that you can do to ensure the healthies hair coat possible, which can potentially reduce the brittleness of the hair follicles and hair shaft.
These include feeding a high quality dog food (ie. Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet are my 2 top brands) and also using a gentle oatmeal based shampoo only once every 2-3 weeks to ensure the haircoat is not becoming too dry, which in turn can lead to breaking of the hair shaft.
There are also tons of great products on the market that aid in removal of shedding hair. One of my favorite products is called the Furminator, and it should be readily available at any major pet store.
One more thing to note, there is a marked difference between shedding and hair loss. Ensure that you pet does not have any bald areas on the hair coat, as this is not considered to be normal shedding and a veterinary visit is in order to look for other possible causes of this presentation in pets. Thanks for your question and have a great day!
