Q. Constipation - could dog food cause it ? Only started when I changed from purnia pro- plan to 4- health

A. Constipation is typically caused by several things including : 1)Inadequate water intake resulting in dehydrated intestinal tract, 2) side effect of certain medications 3) spastic colon -typically seen more often in older cats. I cannot see a very logical reason why the food alone would cause constipation. Because typically even if the new food had, say a higher fiber content, this would help prevent constipation because fiber helps to bulk the stool and will also shorten the transit time (how long it takes food and ingesta to move through the GI tract), which will combat and prevent constipation.
I would look for other causes and ensure your pet has ready access to water. If your pet is not a big water drinker, then adding water to the kibble (dry) food can help. If the constipation is causing severe pain and straining in your pet then I recommend you see veterinary assistance for other possible treatment options.
