Q. My dog gets shaky and wants to go outside when my grandbaby cokmes home. He wants to hide and get ancious. Is there something that I can buy
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. Your dog is displaying signs of fear and avoidance of an unwanted situation. Some pets are just not good for young kids and therefore will exhibit this "flight" response when they are confronted with them.
It is encouraged to work with both the pet and the child to ensure that appropriate play is encouraged instead of allowing the child to do unwanted acts (ie. Pulling of tail, chasing) to the pet. Some children are just too young to understand that certain acts are unwanted by the pet and therefore we have to resort to separating the child and pet oftentimes if things get out of hand or if the pet is showing fear.
This is a relationship boundaries issue and this is typically not treated medically or with pheromones, but instead is a behavioral modification training between pet and young child. Hopefully they can be best friends if you remain consistent and can help them find common ground!
