Q. cat is breathing heavy with mouth closed, wants to sleep. It is wheezing while it's sleeping. It's been a day will still eat a little
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. Wheezing in cats at this age is commonly associated with feline asthma. Feline asthma causes a very audible sound and cats typically aren't in too much respiratory distress initially and this can be managed fairly well inhalant steroids and oral steroids, and bronchodilators to help keep the airways open and non-inflamed.
Feline asthma just like people asthma is thought to be caused by allergies so it is advised to minimize dust particles and dander in the home. Certain litters have less dust accumulation like Yesterday's News, Clay litter and Corn cob based litters. Most cats do fairly well as long as their owners are deducted to their daily need for medication and treatment to help manage their condition.
