Q. Had to put my cat down due to cancer of the stomach and intestines. He has a sister and brother. Will they get the same since their genes r the same ?
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. Yes there are some cancers that are shown to be inherited. I would discuss some potential genetic screening tests for your other cats if you wish to know if they have any predispositions to the same cancer your other cat had. There may be limited information based on the type of cancer that was present however.
This can be a very loaded answer and there are several different genetic tests out there. I would discuss these with your veterinarian if you wish to move forward with having these done. They are not commonly done and there is still more testing being done on pets that will hopefully give us more information than we know today. A. While some cancers are genetically predisposed, it is not a given that his sister and brother will also die of a stomach cancer. I would not worry about it that much.
Any older cat with vomiting and possibly diarrhea, not eating properly should have a veterinary checkup.
