Q. My cat had exploratory surgery, his incision has a little yellow coming out from it. The vet gave him a antibiotic injection. How long until its gone?
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. If there is anything draining from an incision site, that does not have a penrose drain in it, it is considered abnormal. Incision sites on the abdomen in particularly should be completely closed to prevent the contents in the abdomen from falling or seeping out. Yellow discharge can be a sign of infection and even though there is an antibiotic on board there is a potential that there is a bacteria that is resistant to this antibiotic, and therefore another type of antibiotic one may be needed. I would have your veterinarian take another look at this so that he/she can investigate this area further and make the necessary corrections.
