Q. My pet has just had most of her teeth taken out, and hasn't eaten yet, but has drank water. Dont want to ram capsule in mouth. Can be given in anus?
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. No capsules cannot be given via rectal route. They need to pass through the stomach for proper breakdown of the capsule and release of the medication inside. If your pet is having hard time eating, then I would recommend making a slurry for her. You can get canned food and see if she will eat it that way or add a little water to it to assist her. If she seems interested in eating but can't because of pain, I would ask your veterinarian if additional pains meds can be prescribed to help her cope better. We first have to address to the pain if we are going to get her to want to eat anything. Also remember, if the capsule you speak of is an antibiotic, then it should always be given with food to avoid an upset stomach.

A. No, if it is an oral medication than it needs to be given orally. Call your veterinarian and tell him/her that you were having problems giving the capsule and maybe they could switch to a liquid form.
