Q. Can I use tea tree oil on my dogs inflamed gums?
DESTINI R. HOLLOWAY, DVM
A. I would highly advise against applying tea tree oil. It is toxic to dogs when applied to the skin and would most definitely be toxic when applied to the gums which is absorbed even more into your pets circulation.
If your pet has inflamed gums I would suspect that there is periodontal disease present that should be addressed with having a dental cleaning done on her. Also brushing her teeth daily can help prevent tartar before it forms. Good oral hygiene is important for pets heart, kidneys and liver function as they get older, so it is very important to address this sooner rather than later.

A. I would advice against it, it's not likely to help and essential oils can potentially be harmful to a dog's liver.
