Q. I want to become a vet so bad. Yet I sob a the thought of euthanizing animals. I WANT this career, yet I KNOW I will cry in front of the owners.Help?

A. I agree, this can e a very difficult part of the profession but there are times when it is far and away the very best thing that can be done for a pet and is a very important part of end of life care, it is because of our compassion that this can be done. This will become easier as you get more work and life experience and your colleagues and co-workers should help to support you through such decisions also

A. You sound very young, and I suspect that some of life's experiences will toughen you up a bit before you will be euthanizing any animals. That said, veterinarians are not robots; they are human beings. It is okay to shed a tear or two--it shows that you are compassionate and caring. You just don't want to turn on the waterworks! If you see an animal suffering, you will know that euthanasia is the best gift you can give it. That makes the process easier.
