Q. My dog is in the last stages of CKD.. Vomiting yesterday and today. Can't keep anything down a dis weak. He is only 3. How'd I tell when it's time

A. Persistent vomiting and inability to regulate fluid levels are a major issue in end stage kidney disease. You may be able to support him with fluid therapy but unfortunately it is likely that he will not recover to a normal quality of life for a young dog. It is important that you evaluate his comfort and there are 'quality of life scales' such as the one from Ohio State University which address a wide range of questions in order to help to assess such and can help in order to clarify his comfort levels. Remember that it is important to focus on his ability to enjoy life and just because treatments may be available and may prolong life, they are not always the best option for our pets
