Q. What can I do for newborn puppies that have fleas?
LINDSEY EDWARDS MVB, BSC, IVCA
A. Frontline spray is safe to use from 48 hours old and you can apply carefully; this will kill fleas for up to 4weeks and will reduce the risk of the fleas feeding and drawing enough blood to risk anemia. Be sure to treat all bedding areas after the pups are weaned and moved away to break the cycle of infection. In future, treat mothers before mating and birth to prevent risk to puppies
A. Do not apply ANY topicals, shampoos or medications, prescription or OTC. You can bathe them in warm water with a few drops of Dawn dish liquid. This will kill most if not all the fleas. The ones that don't die will be slow enough to remove with a fine toothed comb. Make sure the pups do not get chilled. Dry them thoroughly and keep them warm. You can use Frontline on the mother. You'll need to treat the environment but make sure you use something that will be safe for the pups. Discuss options with your vet.
