Q. I have a 20 year old female cat and I have noticed her hair has become dry and there are patches of baldness. There is no itching or bite marks .

A. This may be related to a fungal or bacterial infection but at this age I would be suspicious of underlying causes such as reduced digestion and metabolism capacity resulting in poor hair growth or possibly even reduced circulation. A full health check with urine and or blood screen will help to rule out underlying medical conditions and a sample of her hair/skin can be used to rule out infections. If all else is well, a diet specific to older cats with a fatty acid supplement may help to restore her coat balance
