Q. Why does my cat jump on my desk with his favorite toy in his mouth lay down and hiss at me and get very aggressive? What do I do about it?
LINDSEY EDWARDS MVB, BSC, IVCA
A. If he is otherwise a sociable character with you this is likely a daring game of cat and mouse which is quite inconvenient for you! There are a number of methods to try to prevent this, distraction techniques such as using an alternative toy to distract him immediately can prevent the conflict; a laser pointer can work well to redirect his attention if he is used to playing with one, there are aerosol based sensor units you could place on your desk which hiss at him when he jumps up and may dissuade him from coming up onto desk, or you could keep him out of the room when you are working. If his toy contains catnip this may be aggravating the situation as this causes an alteration to the chemicals in the brain and can cause 'moments of madness' and confrontational, hunting behavior! I do not recommend using any negative techniques such as splashing him with water as he will associate this with you.
