Q. My cat came home limping, I made her a homemade splint. Two days later she walks on it but it seems severel swollen and she keeps biting it. No blood.
LINDSEY EDWARDS MVB, BSC, IVCA
A. She must be treated urgently by a vet. Limping can occur as a result of a cat bite abscess which can develop into a severe internal infection, would not require a splint but does require antibiotic treatment. Swelling in a leg with a splint is a major concern and can indicate reduction in the circulation either as a result of the original injury or because the splint is compressing important blood vessels. Her leg may well be at risk of amputation if not treated appropriately as an emergency. She will likely need an x-ray in order to diagnose any bone injury and medication for swelling and pain, antibiotics and appropriate support for any injury
