A. Significant weight loss in a middle aged cat should always be investigated by a vet to identify and treat underlying causes. Constant scratching or chronic skin infections can debilitate a cat and conversely a significant medical issue such as diabetes or kidney disease can result in weakening of the skin barrier and reduced healing and repair. A full physical exam, skin scrapes and urinalysis may be required to investigate fully
