Q. Our dog started coughing/choking yesterday afternoon followed with throw up that is clear/foamy/slimy when he's moving around. Should he be seen?
LINDSEY EDWARDS MVB, BSC, IVCA
A. Yes, he should most definitely be seen as urgently as possible. Vomiting of clear foam/mucus indicates that there is no bile/intestinal fluids being vomiting and can indicate an obstruction in the upper gastrointestinal tract/stomach and can rapidly turn very serious if not treated in time before any other damage develops

A. If the coughing and vomiting have happened for more than a day or you are seeing other signs of distress such as loss of bowel movements, inability to eat, lethargy or blue/pale tongue and gums, it is best to have him seen by your vet as soon as possible. It may be that there is an object stuck in the throat or GI tract, or other illness that is causing the symptoms you are seeing.
