A. It is unusual, although not impossible, to develop allergies this late in life (more common to develop less than 6years of age). It would be important to rule out all other causes such as parasites (mange and fleas), bacterial and yeast infections to be sure to treat all concurrent conditions. Skin scrapes would be important to identify any parasites and infections which also require treating. Allergies are best managed by avoiding the offending substance, (hydrolyzed diet if food sensitive), high omega fatty acid supplements, regular shampooing with soap free, allergy specific shampoo and medications as prescribed by your vet until itching reduced and skin wounds healed
