Q. Crystals in urine; cat does not always use litter box at night. Was on meds. Litter box in basement. Has arthritis. Tired of cleaning up.Now what???
LINDSEY EDWARDS MVB, BSC, IVCA
A. It is important to maximize fluid intake to prevent the risk of crystals - wet food is better to achieve this than dry food and water. He may also find it difficult to both climb down to the basement and/or physically climb into the litter tray so pain relief and arthritis specific diets (hills j/d) or joint supplements will help to improve his mobility and reduce accidents, ensure that he sleeps at the level as they tray and that at least one side is lowered so he can step into it easier.
