Q. My shiba is 14 & has been in heat for 6 weeks .....heavy salivating...?
LINDSEY EDWARDS MVB, BSC, IVCA
A. 6 weeks would raise concerns that this is not a normal heat but is a sign of a more significant problem with the lining of the womb - this may be a pyometra and she should be fully investigated by a vet. I would be suspicious the salivating is due to a fever and I recommend a full physical and most likely ultrasound and blood tests to investigate the womb and bladder and assess for signs of infection and significant blood loss. Do not delay treatment any longer than necessary, 6 weeks is a significant length of time and if not resolved by now it is unlikely to without medical intervention
