Q. Our rescue dog (westie/schnauzer mix) has had 3 interdigital cysts in less than a year-treated with clavamox and Dexa/Linc Sol. Any suggestionss?

A. It is important to assess for all potential underlying causes which may be triggering these episodes. Fungal infections such as ringworm or malasezia, bacterial infections, reduced natural skin barrier function, food allergies, immune mediated diseases and internal conditions causing thin/delicate skin can all contribute to such cysts. Scrupulous cleaning and drying of the feet can also help, there are a number of skin ointments containing tea tree oil and other natural antiseptics formulated specifically to be safe for dogs and these can be very effective. Ensure his diet is appropriate for dogs with delicate skin and is supplemented with antioxidants and omega fatty acids
