Q. JUST GOT MY DOG SHE IS A YEAR OLD AND HAS NOT HAD ANY SHOTS WHAT KIND OF SHOTS DOES SHE NEED
DR. ANDREA M. BRODIE, DVM
A. She will need the so-called core vaccines: canine parvovirus (CPV), canine distemper virus (CDV), canine adenovirus (CAV), and rabies. These will have to be given three times (except rabies) and then a booster after 1 year for all. Depending on the area where you live and the recommendation by your veterinarian there are also so-called non-core vaccines that are given only if necessary : Vaccines considered as non-core vaccines are canine parainfluenza virus (CPiV), canine influenza virus, distemper-measles combination vaccine, Bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough),Leptospira spp., and Borrelia burgdorferi. If these diseases are common in your area then vaccination would be advisable. You should also have her spayed if you do not to intend to breed her.

A. For a 1 year old dog I the recommended shots are:
DA2PP + Lepto - distemper and lepto are found everywhere and if your pet is outdoors I highly recommend the leptospirosis vaccine. Small breed dogs can be susceptible to having allergic reactions to the Lepto vaccine so you can discuss pre-medicating your pet with an antihistamine pill or shot before giving this vaccine to prevent adverse reactions.
Bordetella - also called "kennel cough", recommended for any pet who is ever going to be around other animals
Rabies -most states require this except for Rabies free states like where I live (Hawaii) : )
