Q. My 10 month puppy has boack tarry feces. She has no other signs or symptoms noticable. Will this pass? Is she in danger? Thankyou -Cameron
DR. ANDREA M. BRODIE, DVM
A. Black tarry feces are a sign of a gastrointestinal bleed. The feces are black when blood gets digested. Such a bleed can be caused by hookworms, an injury in the stomack or small intestine (e.g. By a sharp bone or foreign body), toxin ingestion , ulcers, etc. You should worm your puppy, but if, after worming, the feces remain tarry you need to take her to a vet. Also check her gums. They should be pink. If they are white, your puppy needs to see a vet ASAP.
