Q. My poodle is having global seizures once a week. His insulin is less than one, but glucose is normal. Is diabetes a plausible cause for the seizures?
DR. ANDREA M. BRODIE, DVM
A. Hypoglycemia could be a possible cause, however if your dog should hypoglycemic that often either his treatment needs to be readjusted or there may be an additional problem such as a pancreatic tumor . Addison's disease can also cause seizures as a brain tumor. Sometimes the cause of seizures is not detectable. Poodles are also prone to congestive heart failure and could suffer from so-called syncopes (the heart is too weak to pump enough oxygenated blood to the brain) which make the poodle faint and often appear like seizures. You should have your vet investigate this as frequent seizures can and should be treated, and a heart condition, if present will also need to be treated.
