Q. My dog was diagnosed with a bladder stone. I can not afford the surgery. What herbs can I use to treat her?
DR. ANDREA M. BRODIE, DVM
A. Herbs will not dissolve the stone. There are certain chemicals and /or diets that can be fed that may or may not dissolve or break up the stone, however in order to recommend one I would need to know what the stone consists of. This can be determined by a urinalysis. Your vet should be able to recommend a prescription diet. Unfortunately most stones are rough and will constantly irritate the lining of the bladder and a) cause pain., b) pave the way for urinary tract infections. c) at worst block the urethra and make it impossible for your dog to urinate. You should really have the surgery done, Maybe you can come to an agreement to pay for the surgery in installments. or put into your search engine: "help with veterinary bills". There may be help out there.
