Q. My 6 month old female dog eats her own faeces. She has a healthy diet and is fed regularly. Why is she doing this?
A. Eating feces is normal with many different animal species. In dogs, it is not part of the digestive process, but it is a normal cleaning behavior in mother dogs with pups. Some dogs eat stool even without puppies in a misguided attempt to clean either the yard or their kennel. This can easily turn into a habit.
A product called Forbid, available online and at various pet stores, can be added to the food to make the feces unpalatable (like it isn't already?! :-). Picking up the fecal material from the yard as soon as she defecates will also keep her from eating it.
