Q. My cat is what I call psychotic. She is nice if I'm seated, but hisses and claws at me most of the time. Will she ever be nice?
A. She may need more places to climb and play to get her energy levels worn down. Be sure to provide her with plenty of cat trees, scratching posts, perches and hiding spots so that she has plenty of activity. Give her toys, especially a few stuffed animals that are big enough for her to wrestle and fight with. Keep one of these around for when she gets nutsy on you, when she comes after you. Toss it to one side to serve as a distraction. And keep a water gun or spray bottle, set on stream, filled and handy. Most cats will learn to avoid whatever behavior earned them a squirt from a water pistol. There are also calming pheromone diffusers you can put around your house (Feliway is a good brand), calming treats and diets (Royal Canin has an excellent calming food.) that may also help.
