Q. For the last 12+ hours, my dog has had diarrhea. Just in the past two hours, I found blood in his stool. Is there anything I can do for him?
A. Ideally, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and fecal analysis, as he could have parasites, a bacterial or viral infection, swallowed something that irritated his bowel, or just may have eaten something that disagreed with him. Since this has been going on for over 12 hours, this is my first choice for getting his problem resolved. Dogs lose a lot of fluids through diarrhea and he could be getting dehydrated.
If he seems fine otherwise, you can withhold food for 24 hours. He can have plenty of water. After 24 hours, feed him a very small amount of plain boiled white rice mixed 50/50 with either plain boiled hamburger or boneless chicken breast, no salt or seasonings added to any of it. If all goes well, with no vomiting or diarrhea afterward, wait 30-45 minutes and give him a little more. Keep doing this until he has had a normal meal amount and then he can be transitioned back onto his regular food over several days. If he continues having diarrhea, seems painful, especially in his abdomen, develops vomiting, lethargy or loss of appetite, get him seen by your vet right away.
