Q. My kitty isn13 yrs. Old. All of a sudden he starts pooping on the floor instead of in his litter box.. What could be problem?
A. As an older kitty, he may now have some arthritis that makes it harder for him to get in and out of the litter box. Additionally, sometimes cats preferences change and he may be less tolerant of a less than pristine litter box. Fecal incontinence is possible, but is usually associated with an underlying medical condition. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and blood work to determine the cause of his condition. Treatment will vary depending on the results of the exam and testing. If he checks out as healthy, then his symptoms could be behavioral.
