Q. My dog has an occasional cough.what are some others symptoms of heart worms.she is very active & has a good appetite
A. Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen.
An occasional cough might be as simple as an irritant in the environment, to a pulmonary condition or heart condition unrelated to heartworm disease. I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam, labwork and possibly x-rays to determine the cause for your dog's cough. If your dog has been off preventative, a heartworm test will let you know if your dog needs to be treated for them or if you can start her on preventative.
