Q. My 5 year old Great Dane: diarrhea for 4-5 weeks and eating it in the beginning (she tries to eat it but I stop her) she is thirsty and losing weight
A. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop, see your veterinarian. Consider lab work (CBC, chemistry/thyroid panel, urinalysis, fecal exam) to diagnose the cause of her thirst and weight loss. Review her diet to ensure adequate nutrition, vitamins and minerals. She may be trying to eat her stool to make up for a lack in vitamins or minerals.
