Q. My dog has been taking meds for UTI over 2 weeks and does not seem to get better. She pees and poops in her crate when we leave her. What should I do?
A. Have her rechecked by your veterinarian. Have your vet collect a sterile urine sample for urinalysis and culture. This can identify the responsible bacteria and determine the most effective antibiotic to use for treatment. Reinforce crate training (again if necessary). The crate should only be big enough for her to stand, turn around and lay down. Put her on a strict schedule to go outside for elimination. She goes out FIRST thing in the morning. Pick a spot outside and wait. No walks until she goes. Praise and reward her when she goes. Return her to the crate or place on a leash on your hip so you can watch for her cues to go. Take up the water 2 hours before bedtime and take her out right before bedtime. Be patient. Be consistent.
