Q. My 6 yr old male cats anus is red and swollen. He is over weight. Is there a home remedy for this.
A. Rule out intestinal parasites or impacted anal glands. Submit a stool sample to your vet. Additional fiber in the diet can aid in defecation and may decrease the incidence of anal gland impaction. Feed a good quality canned food. It should come from the can looking a hockey puck. A canned diet will also increase the amount of moisture in the diet which will aid defecation and hydration. If the swelling does not resolve, see your veterinarian. There may be a prolapse or partial prolapse that requires veterinary attention.
