Q. My cat in 5 days has been throwing up will not eat or drink. All she does is put her paws in her water dish. How to get her to eat and drink
A. Since it has been so long, a visit to your vet for an exam is recommended. Bloodwork (CBC, chemistry profile, urinalysis) may shed some light on her condition. Cats who do not eat for 3+ days are at risk of serious liver related complications. If this is not possible, try withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not and if the appetite does not return, you will definitely need to see your veterinarian.
