Q. 3 month old puppy has loss of appetite, black stool, lethargic
A. Given the symptoms and young age, this pup should be seen by a veterinarian. Rule out parvovirus infection and offer supportive care (IV fluids, antibiotics, parenteral nutrition) if indicated. If a vet is unavailable, offer water or unflavored PediaLyte. Feed a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. Feed until the stool is normal then transition to a quality puppy food. Submit a stool sample to your vet to rule out intestinal parasites or other infection. You will definitely need to see a vet if the puppy does not regain its appetite.
