Q. Recently my 4yr lab mix starting being aggressive with my 7yr lab mix, but only at the dog park. Also began being super protective with sticks
A. Take a break from the dog park for a few days to "reset" them. When you go back, keep the aggressive dog on a leash and correct any aggressive behavior until it passes. Offer praise and reward when the dog acts appropriately. It may take time, but be firm and consistent in correcting the behavior as soon as it starts. Do not allow the dog off the leash until the correct behavior is consistently displayed. Restrict access to sticks or toys that set off the protective behavior. Calming pheromone collars or sprays may be effective in decreasing the aggressive tendencies. A consult with a certified veterinary behaviorist and/or trainer is recommended if the behavior continues after medical causes have been ruled out by your vet.
