Q. If a puppy has atrioventricular dysplasia valve how can you find out which parent is the carrier?
A. There is no specific genetic test for AVD in dogs. If the parents are known to have the condition (via xray, EKG and echo), it would have been prudent to not breed them initially or to discontinue breeding them now. The pups should definitely be spayed or neutered to prevent the passing on of the trait. The condition may be manageable depending on the severity of the disease. Discuss a prognosis with your vet or a veterinary cardiologist.
