Q. I have a 7 yr old lab retriever and she has a heart condition She has got pyometra now.how should this be treated in an older dog like her?
A. This depends on the severity of the pyometra. If it is a closed pyometra she may require immediate surgery or risk the infection spreading systemically if the uterus ruptures. If the pyometra is open she may be able to take antibiotics for the time being and you can consult with a veterinary cardiologist regarding the best method of treatment.
A. If she has been spayed she cannot have pyometra, as that is an infection of the uterus (which she no longer has). If our information is incorrect and she has not been spayed, the only treatment for pyometra is surgical removal of the uterus, which should be done immediately.
