Q. My two small dogs ate shrimp and white rice sautéed in organic freshly chopped garlic and butter, will they be okay? What should I do?
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. The ingredients listed are not toxic to dogs in small amounts, however any people food can cause minor digestive upset. The most common signs are vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy from not feeling well. In some cases, people food can cause pancreatitis in some dogs (inflammation of the pancreas) which usually presents with more severe symptoms such as blood in the stool or vomit, and a painful abdomen or hunched back.
For minor digestive upset, picking up food for a few hours then offering a bland meal of plain boiled chicken and plain rice can help. However, if symptoms continue for more than a day, or the symptoms are more serious as listed above, it is best to contact your local veterinarian instead.
