Q. Is there any ingredient in dog food that dehydrates dogs or makes them drink more water than usual?
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. Ingredients in food should not cause your dog to be dehydrated, however dry foods contain less water than wet foods, so may increase your dog's drinking habits.
However, if your dog appears to be constantly thirsty, or also has had an increase in urination, it can indicate an underlying metabolic issue. Diseases such as Diabetes, Cushing's and more can all cause changes in thirst and urinary habits. Your vet will likely recommend blood work to check for these conditions, which can be treated with daily medications and changes to the diet.
