Q. My cat hides under my bed, I have had him for just over two weeks. He only comes out to eat and use the litter box. What can I do?

A. Cats can be very timid when in a new experience, such as recently moving to a new home with new people. It may take him some time to get used to his new surroundings, especially if there are other pets or young children in the house. In the meantime, making sure he can get to his food and litter without having to go into high-stress or high-traffic areas can help during adjustment. Luring him out for a little play with a feather toy may also encourage him to begin exploring the house. Offering cat treats as well as talking in a calm and soothing voice may help too. If he continues to act timid, adding a pheromone plug-in or collar may also help. These release a pheromone that is calming to cats and can help in stressful situations.
